This video shows the basics of how a snare works.

Snares are small cages with up to 6 fishing line or weedeater line loops attached to them. The cages are filled with bait and they are cast via fishing pole out into the water. After allowing the snare to rest on the bottom for about 15 minutes, the lines are pulled in and checked, and then recast if nothing is caught. Many snare crabbers can feel if a crab is one the line.

Once the line is pulled in, it is tightened around a crab leg, claw or other part, dragging the crab in as it is being reeled.
